The Binary Is Dead…Except for Celebrities?

This opinion piece explores the way in which we have generally accepted the non-binary nature of gender and sexuality, except with respect to celebrities. I examine this issue using the example of the ubiquitous Harry Styles and cite several articles which criticize and defend him. I conclude by suggesting that celebrities are entitled to privacy with regard to their sexuality.

Women and Casual Fridays
This paper, written for my AP Lang class in October of 2022, analyzed a taste trend in the United States. I chose to look at the popularity of Casual Friday through the historical lens of Hawaiian shirts and Aloha Friday. In addition, I went on to look at what this trend means for underrepresented minorities in the workplace, particularly women.

The Changing Patterns of American Knitting
This paper, written for my AP Lang class in December 2022, analyzed a modern trend. I chose to examine the increase in young knitters in the United States. Through interviews with young knitters, knitting store owners, and national experts, I investigated how and why knitting has become more mainstream. I also analyzed the fascinating emergence of public knitting and graffiti knitting.

This opinion piece summarizes the controversy surrounding Joe Rogan, an alumnus of Newton South High School, and the claims he made regarding COVID-19 and race on his Spotify podcast. Although I acknowledged his apology, I used this forum to cast doubt on the veracity of his claims of naïveté. This piece was cited in a Boston Globe article about Rogan.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

This opinion piece was written in response to a new wave of violence in the Israel-Palestine conflict. After summarizing the recent issues on both sides, I called attention to the complexity of the issues and warned against the tendency for social media posts around this issue to devolve into anti-semitism.
